Default 22LR pistol vs bulk 9mm ammo

Been thinking about picking up a S&W 22 compact for awhile. Partially because ammo is cheaper/ to practice with on lieu of my 9mm shield, and for fun. 300-500 rounds for 20 bucks is pretty sweet.

But for the price of the gun, i thought maybe I should just buy bulk 9mm to practice more instead. That's like 1-2000.

    What are ya'lls thoughts? I haven't had a 22 pistol yet.

Please tell where to buy the .22s at that price.
There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

You haven't bought ammo in a long time, have you?

Walmart still sells 22 for around $20 a box.... I'd buy the 22 pistol and shoot it until 9mm gets more reasonable.

While your choice of the S&W Compact M&P 22lr is a solid one.We own two in the family .Starting to see a drop in price on ammo 9mm and 22lr ,My thoughts are If you have a few bucks a week extra get a box or two.Your stash will grow very fast !

I love the idea of a 22 for practice.

Watch, though, a lot of semi auto 22s are picky on ammo.

My GSG 1911 22 doesn't run well on cheap bulk ammo. It prefers things like CCI stingers or similar, which is around $10 for 50 rounds. Still about half the cost of 9mm, but not nearly the costs savings as shooting bulk.

With that said, I am looking at the Glock G44 as my duty weapon is a G45 so I am thinking the same as you

My wife has a S&W M&P in 22lr. It's a fun gun to shoot and it's a decent analog for the full size M&P 9mm. But it is also ammo sensitive. It likes expensive, high velocity stuff. Stuff you couldn't buy for $20 a box when prices weren't off the charts. For pure plinking fun, I've yet to find something better than my Kel Tec P17. That thing eats everything. Best $179 I've spent in years on a gun. Honorable mention goes to the Kel Tec CP33 and the Taurus TX22. The CP33 doesn't like anything under 40gr (it's in the manual). And the TX22 requires an upgraded recoil system (Lakeline) right out of the box to keep it from beating itself to death. But other than that, both have been reliable and fun as hell to shoot.

I have both the M&P compact and the GSG 1911/22 and they both handle the inventory of Federal Target Grade 1200 fps LRs that I have ($7.50/325 rd box in 2018 ) nicely. The M&P is, IMO, the better gun. The GSG I have was sold by Sig Sauer.

A .22 is always good to have and is essential for introducing new shooters.
