Blacked out rear sights
After years of ensuring the guns I've purchased have night sights (just seemed like common sense), I recently bought a pistol with plain rear sight and a trijicon front sight. I find myself being able to focus on the front sight instinctively, whereas with night sights I usually had to remind myself to focus on the front sight at some point during a shooting session. Who else uses this sighting arrangement and what are your experiences/preferences?

Re: Blacked out rear sights
This is how my 1911 is set up. Black rear and dot front.

Re: Blacked out rear sights
After shooting competitions for a while I switched to blacked out rear with a fiber optic front sight. I also have it setup where the gap on either side of the front sight is about the width of the front sight. It really allows you to see more and get on target a lot faster. It does take some time to get used to. On really close targets it's almost like a red dot. Farther shots you have to focus on the outline of the sight post. One thing I found is I can't have the fiber optic too bright. It will make it too hard to see the sight outline. I've dimmed it down with black permanent marker.

Re: Blacked out rear sights
I think what's happening when I use the standard two dot, one dot night sights is that my eyes try to focus on all three dots at the same time, and then tries to align the two rear dots with the front dot. Way too much changing focus and too many things going on. I've avoided the front dot only for years but I think I'm a convert now.

Re: Blacked out rear sights
Good but old idea...we used to use carbon black on our sights in Bullseye competition. Worked wonderfully.
