To Bubba..Or not to Bubba
I recently acquired a last ditch Arisaka 99 in 7.7 Jap for 50 bucks. She's got a badly cracked stock and is missing the barrel band for the forearm. Barrel seems to have had a wood lacquer put on it at some time(only god knows why someone did this) in the past 30 years thats flaking off. Everything works as it should, picked it up because I had another one if I ever needed parts and couldn't pass it up for 50 cash. Bore is decent considering all else.
Im on the fence on making this a cursed gun.... Should I blast it and rattle can it? Maybe get it re-chambered professionally and threaded for a can? Drilled and tapped for a scope?
Biggest idea for now is if I should get a custom stock made or just let the thing sit until I need parts.
I am a collector and understand this is blasphemy, but the rifle is so far gone. First regular forum post of my own. What do y'all think I should or shouldn't do?
Thanks

IMO not worth "improving" or trying to make into something it isn't, especially when you can get a new rifle that's accurate, right off the shelf for a few hundred bucks these days.
But that doesnt mean a little elbow grease couldn't turn it into a fun range toy. I'd try to fix the stock or find a cheapie replacement. Clean up the metal however you wish, and rattle can with your favorite shade of rustoleum or engine enamel.

Re: To Bubba..Or not to Bubba
Is the Mum still intact? If yes save the rifle. Do a nice restoration. If it was ground down, Bubba it. and have fun with it.

Re: To Bubba..Or not to Bubba
Anyone letting a mum get away for fifty bucks sure didn't know what s/he had...and anyone buying it for fifty bucks should go to confession.
There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

Why do anything to it where there is no ammo for it?

See if it shoots accurately, first.

Re: To Bubba..Or not to Bubba
What everyone said , if the mum is intact, restore it. The Laquer on the barrel may be original, I have seen a few last ditch that the metal finish was omitted and the rifle was assembled with the metal in the white and the entire rifle stock and all was coated with a varnish for protection, the steel has taken on a patina from age and could appear to have been blued or finished of some kind
Gun parts and Sarco still stock some parts
