Question about Storing Firearms
Hello all,
I recently got into collecting firearms and own a couple of long guns and pistols. I have maybe 2-3 guns I shoot, the rest I’m just collecting(bought brand new). Will it be harmful to my Firearms’ longevity to store them long term in the card board boxes I bought them in, in the the condition I bought them in(factory lube, immobilized, etc)? Any and all input and experiences are welcome. Thank you in advance.

Re: Question about Storing Firearms
In my opinion, yes it can be harmful. Cardboard attracts and holds moisture. Then rust will follow.
If you have a good dehumidifier in the room and keep everything oiled well, then you'd likely be fine. But I'd look into at a minimum a metal gun cabinet that won't hold the moisture of paper.

Re: Question about Storing Firearms
with black friday coming up you can probably find a deal on a safe or a locker and then use dehumidifiers in it.

Re: Question about Storing Firearms
Thank you so much for the replies so far. I am in an apartment and will likely be moving rather frequently next couple years. I will look into buying the vacuum sealed bags and desiccant. As far as the long term storage lube is concerned, should that be placed in the barrel and on all internal components of the gun as well?

Re: Question about Storing Firearms
If you are living in an apartment with any kind of climate control (no basement or attic storage), then the firearms will be fine in the original boxes. Just check on them from time to time to ensure no corrosion.

Re: Question about Storing Firearms
I bought an old new stock H&R Handi-Rifle in the box this summer. Cardboard indeed draws moisture where this gun was stored. Not horrible but there was discoloring in the bluing and some rust forming where the gun contacted the cardboard. Even in the wrapping which was plastic. (worse than cloth).
If air conditioned summer and heated in winter, as long as they are oiled and not allowed to collect dust, they'll be fine.Engineers make things idiot proof! Evolution makes better idiots!
