If you decide after all to upgrade, the Strike Industries Exended Latch CH mentioned above really is the most bang for the buck, IMO.

I use the medium BCM charging handle, as referenced by several before me. I found mine used in the Classified section of the site and it wasn't too pricey, although I can't recall the exact price. $30-35?

I can't add valuable insight, as all my AR's still sport their factory handles. I have been looking at a few. The Radian line seems to get a lot of positive response. They run $60-$110.

I got the Strike Industries latch. Had the same issue you had. It doesn*t stick out too far and it*s not intrusive. Was easy to change out. For about $15 you might want to check it out. Just the latch, not the whole assembly.
