Re: Which ONE Rifle SHTF?
I work with hand tools day in and day out. Can you make a tool do a job it wasn*t intended to do? Yes! I can bang in a nail with pliers, cut wood with tin snips ect.. the point is you can make the not correct tool work in a pinch. My answer is multiple firearms for specific jobs. After all a firearm is a tool, why not use the correct one for the job.

Re: Which ONE Rifle SHTF?
In my original post, I linked to articles that described how the genocides of the past 100 years came about. The articles went on to try to make the case that we are now heading in a similar direction with the part of the Jews/Armenians being played by conservatives and the part of the Nazis/Turks being played by a growing leftist socialist gov. (For what its worth, the historical pictures in the articles were horrific, and I'm not all that squeamish!)
Thinking along those lines, I started to consider whether the long range effectiveness of 308 (HK91, M1A) trumped the lighter more carriable 5.56 (AR, Mini, etc,) and whether 7.62 x 39 should be immediately ruled out due to the caliber not being used universally in the US as the others are. Also, is a super accurate 308 bolt more useful in a defense scenario than a semi, even though rate of fire is much less? Further, does the better concealability of a Tavor or FN2000 give it an advantage over the common AR, even if future parts may be more scarce?
Since this becomes a Wolverines thought exercise, the basic question I had was if I hear the invaders' jeeps coming up my street, which one rifle do I run out the door with and into the woods, knowing that I might not ever again have access to the rest of my stuff?

Re: Which ONE Rifle SHTF?
IMO the definition really doesn't matter. If something occurs on a global or national scale (e. g. there are no "unaffected" areas from which aid and relief can be relied upon), any scenario from "mild" to "wild" is going to suck big time.
Anyone participating in this thread (themselves or family members) rely on daily, perishable medication(s)?
Some 20 years ago I read that 60% of the population in the western industrialized world is on some form of anti-depressant or psychotropic medication. Any idea what will happen when all those people run out of their medication in an already stressful and frightening situation?
In 1906, Alfred Henry Lewis stated, *There are only nine meals between mankind and anarchy.* Since then, his observation has been echoed by people as disparate as Robert Heinlein and Leon Trotsky.
Each and every one of you may be prepared and well-stocked. The problem is the hundreds of millions of others who are not. The odds aren't very good and even that is probably overstated.

Re: Which ONE Rifle SHTF?
I have probably 600 rounds or so not including what's in loaded magazines. I meant more for long term SHTF where you're actively moving and may need to replenish ammo. IMO you'd be far more likely to come across .308 or 5.56 than 5.7x28. One of the first things to go in a SHTF situation will be ammo stores and gun shops so it would make sense to stick with the most popular calibers as a long term option.
The other thing would be what type of SHTF scenario are people talking about? IE - Red Dawn type scenario, government takeover or defund the police and defending yourself from hood rats venturing out of the cities?

Make mine a standard version of the Springfield M1A. My battlesight zero hasn't changed in 55 years.
