Default Five gallon bucket water purifier

I would like to make a five gallon bucket water purifier and wondered if anyone has done so and what filters did you use? I started watching YouTube videos and it's slightly overwhelming. There seems to be a large price difference between many of the filters and I'd rather pay once.

Any other tips are appreciated, too.

My uncles built a couple hundred gallon concrete cistern for their hunting and fishing cabin many, many decades ago. It was fed from a rain gutter coming off a section of the metal roof. They used a 18x24” terra cotta pipe, with layers of lump charcoal, sand, and finer charcoal, to feed in to the cistern. I can remember times in the summer pulling out a medium size metal garbage can to make the charcoal when they decided to clean it out and replace the filtration media.

They and their friends all drank that water for many decades, were extremely healthy, other than lingering WW2 wounds, and lived very long lives. Many in to their late 90’s.

That said, I would go with the Berkey filter also. But their system worked and I would use it again in a pinch, especially with treating the water lightly.

I don't get the pay once. Filters need changing and it's related to what it's filtering. Also filters can grow stuff so another reason to change them.

Zero water filters show layers on the box but are just all mixed together in their filters. The resin imparts a taste. Just an FYI for anyone thinking of water filters for the refrigerator.
