They're sort of a bitch to light and they tend to snap in two when using the pressure required to get a spark using the strike strip on the box.

    Better get some fire starters!
    Why not both?

I made some char cloth the other day. First time. I guess I left the tin in too long because I ended up with a clump that crumbled when I tried to separate the pieces. It still lit with a spark and burned but I only salvaged a couple pieces

Maybe the hole in the tin was too big. A couple pin holes with a 6 penny nail is sufficient

I'm no expert. I just use two small pin holes

Poke a small hole in the top for the combustion gases to escape while burning. Once the smoke from the hole becomes clear, the charring is complete. Remove from the heat and immediately stick a toothpick into the hole to seal it off and prevent oxygen from entering the tin, allowing combustion to continue. You want this to essentially be charcoal and good charcoal is created in a mostly oxygen free atmosphere.

I prefer old, ripped demin. Makes a stout char cloth. Store it in an air tight container or it will absorb moisture from the air and won't take or hold a spark as well.

Wood burner in the barn gets used infrequently.
I recycle cardboard into heat, along with wood.

Birthday cake candles work great for getting a little flame going

Last longer than a match, dont burn fingers like the disposable lighters.

    Free when salvaged post cake.
