That might work, until you get shot and you're quickly consumed in a chemical fire. Of course, consider the weight of such a vest, probably heavier than ceramic plates.

Maybe a better idea would be a similar idea except using overlapping AR500 plates in a dragon scale type configuration, wrapped in kevlar to stop the spawl.

I'll restate my original point - this is field-expedient 21st century peasant fodder (hence the "Mad Max" in the title).

You know, for the folks who can't afford AR500 plates.

Could be because the battery is on the back of the phone and they shot the front. Appears the battery pack blew off without any real penetration into it. I don't know what type of battery is in those old packs. But some batteries do indeed catch fire due to impact damage. The divisions between cells is so thin that an impact causes them to short across and start a fire.

Of course in a Mad Max world, you'd have a better chance of finding Apocalypse Pudding than you would a supply of Nokia battery packs that could be made into a vest.

I'd think dead phone batteries would be in abundant supply at that point. After all, MAD MAX is about 15 minutes into the future from where we are now.

Yes, the reality of what can happen to lithium ion batteries when punctured seems to not have been considered by the OP

We should be looking into and using non-newtonian technology and materials if we were to have a real conversation about this.

Anyone with half a brain should see the many flaws in attempting to use potentially explosive batteries as some form of armor.

In fact, materials such as D3O show amazing potential for current and future body armor applications for trauma padding, with other similar materials being refined to be bullet and stab proof.
