    Default US&S 1911a1

I picked this up at a local public auction. The auction listing noted a "45 acp", along with numerous hunting rifles and shotguns, but provided few other details. I was shocked when I saw it was a US&S and it was receiving little attention. Most people were obviously there in hopes of purchasing hunting firearms. I have always wanted a US&S but assumed they were out of my price range. I was shocked when I had the winning bid and only one other guy was bidding against me!! it came with 5 LOADED WWII magazines, two of which were the older two-tone type. I disassembled and cleaned it when I got home and it appears to be all original. I would rate the Dulite finish at 90% +. Needless to say, I was thrilled and hope to pass it to my son. It was better than any "barn find" I've ever heard of!!

What a find. First I've heard of that maker.
There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

They didn't make many and only for 1 year. They're highly collectable. If it's in as nice of original shape as the op stated, it's worth some coin to a collector.

Well , there's a few red flags to tell me that it's not all original. 2 different grips and US&S guns had flat-side hammers. The blanchard grinding swirls on the frame , and US property markings are suspicious too. Might want to post some pics on the 1911 collector forums for a more informed diagnosis.

I agree with you on the grips and saw that instantly. One has rings around the screw holes and the other doesn't. As to the hammer, it is correct for a US&S. It does have a flat side hammer and fine cross-hatching on the hammer spur and slide stop release. The serial number is within US&S production and the finish is obviously original. Stampings on the frame and slide are true to US&S production methods. I've gotten several "expert opinions" since I purchased it and I'm fairly confident it's original. I spoke with the elderly gentlemen/owner of the firearms at the auction and he stated he inherited it from his father-in-law, who brought it back. As I stated in my original post, the magazines were still loaded with WWII ammo which had turned green!

i agree, its a replacement hammer...only colts originally shipped with the wide hammer, before switching to the narrow hammer as well. us&s made 17 of their own parts, hammers were one of them.
with that serial number, you're pretty near the end of the run.
it's only metal, we can out think it....

You are absolutely right. I pulled out my Clawson’s and it is not the correct hammer. I’m still happy to have a US&S, even if not 100%. Thanks for your sharp eye and input.
