You're right, that could well have been the scenario. Careful who you trust. I may or may not have regularly broken the no weapons on the premises policy at my old corporate gig but I didn't tell anyone in the office about it.

Sounds like somebody was out to get the guy.

    This was my first thought.

And probably got advice here on POOFA that it was fine to have firearms on school property...

It IS fine, but you can't carry in a vehicle, outside of the enumerated exceptions, without a license. *That* is not fine.

The gun in the car with no license prevents a "lawful purpose" affirmative defense on the §912 charge, and having the car on school grounds elevates the §6106 charge from a M1 to a F3 (though both are prohibiting if convicted). The two together make it extremely unlikely that he will fully prevail, absent jury nullification.

This case should also be a reminder to NEVER allow a search of your property (even by your employer, and even if you've previously consented on paper as a condition of employment) and to NOT talk to the police!

If he had simply kept his mouth shut, his really bad day would likely have ended with being unemployed, and not charged with any crime. Changing jobs is usually a PITA, but it's not a horrible time to be looking for work, and even an extended unemployment would be preferable to a couple of years in jail.

Surprised the news didn't mention if the guns were ''properly registered''!

There might be a different set of rules (not laws) for school employees.

Many employment agreements state by merely being on company (or school) property , you automatically consent to a search.

By the employer, NOT the police, and if that time comes, they will not touch your vehicle or any of your property, because of liability.

They require you to do it (or be fired for refusing). I am not aware of ANY situation where an employer can simply go wholly on their own and execute the search of an employees personal property without notice/participation from the owner. A company locker, or company-owned vehicle would be a different story.

The big question is does he have a LTCF. If so, both charges are not applicable, and he could have standing for a civil rights lawsuit.

If he doesn’t have a LTCF, he is likely hosed.
