Default The hunting ammo shortage is real

I was actually able to pick up a box of Remington Core Lokt .30-30 tonight at my local WalMart for under twenty bucks. I have been looking for a box for several months as I recently picked up a new to me T/C Contender pistol in .30-30. Now, I have at least 250 rounds of mixed .30-30 as I already have a Marlin 336. I have seen twenty round boxes at gun shows listed for sixty bucks. Sadly they were selling. If I was new to the caliber or a "casual" hunter, I would seriously be shit out of luck this year. The big box store by me has plenty of .375 H and H as well as some oddball Weatherby loads, but almost zero common calibers. What is a newb supposed to do this year? Even for the "prepared" hunters, I think many of them are going to choose a rifle or pistol to use this upcoming season simply based on the ammo they have on hand. I'll be toting the new T/C

It has been for over a year. I had trouble finding .308 hunting ammo last year.

The price of .30-30 is just retarded. I stocked up when it was $12-$14 a box.

Was looking for .25-06 for the granddaughter. She got her Jr license and wants to use her mom’s gun.

Best price was at Natchez. $28.50 for Hornady American Whitetail 117 gr. It was about $10 cheaper than anything else I could find.

If I were new to hunting, I'd buy a muzzle loader or crossbow until ammo becomes more available.

I have a friend that's selling off his neighbors ammo.
    I think he wanting 20/box for 308, 25 for .06 and a bit more for 7mm and 300 wm.

For now, those days of full shelves of 30-30 and .06 core lockd are behind us.

Fortunately, I reload and had stocked up sufficiently on 308 bullets, powders and primers. At least enough to get me thru multiple seasons.

    I saw some 30-30 ,
listed at $3 a round on ammoseek. It's nuts.

Oh their ammo is expensive... especially for a new shooter. Lost, bent,or exploded bolts plus tips.

209 primers are hard as hell to find too. 20o of them cost me almost 80 dollars shipped, and that*s from gunbroker.

I used ammoseek.com to find .243 ammo which we use for hunting. Bass Pro would occasionally get some in and post for *decent* prices. I haven*t bought *06 for over a year with it going for over $2 per round for anything decent.

I haven't bought any commercial rifle ammo in decades and I haven't kept up with the prices.......But what is a decent price for hunting ammo? In the 80's early 90's you could find 308 / .30-06 on special during hunting season for around $10 but by 2010 it was hard to find hunting rounds for for under $1 a shot. And surplus 7.62 was going for almost .75 cents a round.

The price might seem high now but it has been creeping up way before Covid. Gone are the days of $1 a shot.
