Mechanically good? Hows the bore, and the crown? How about the action smooth in single or double action. .38/.357 load and fire equally well? If all that is true, I hope your friend has a long and use-filled "association" with the revolver. Use and enjoy it in good health!

He totally tore the gun apart, cleaned, reassembled and fired and said besides the pitting under grips and finish issues, it is like a "new gun" as far as bore, and the "legendary" smooth Manuhrin action, accuracy, etc. Ugh. He said my call obviously, but a little love on the finish and a great gun.

Here's a couple shots. Half of me says some work and it will look ok again and is already mechanically fine. Other half says almost a grand for this, am I crazy. Ugh. Some used MR73 combat's have sold north of $4k. But the condition I think those that really know about the gun will say do it, those that don't will say way too much for something in that condition. Double ugh.

Depends on what you actually want it for. If you want it for a shooter/maybe carry some, it's probably worth it. As for adding value to a collection, probably not much.

Myself, I'd probably prefer a little longer barrel for a shooter, so I'd probably pass. Since it's you, let us know how it shoots after you clean it up.

They are, if not the best, one of the best quality revolvers you can buy, they're designed with the requirement that they be able to handle 10's of thousands of rounds of full power .357 per year without wearing out, because that's how much the French police unit they were designed for practices.

All kidding aside , I've played with a few post-war Manuhrin-made PPs and P-1s and they were every bit as well made as any commercial Walther , and even had a better polish/blue on the slides.

$700 will get you a decent GP100. A tube of Flitz, or toothpaste if you're cheap, and a few hours of dry firing will make it one of the smoothest revolvers around. Shoot 10k rounds through it and send it back to Ruger when you wear it out.
