Question Question for the cops of POOFA

I'm currently hanging at Mom & Dad's because reasons. Mom likes a bunch of cop shows - BlueBloods, NCIS, Magnum, Five-O, etc. We see the same thing in almost all of them, and she always asks why:

Cops call out to a suspect, either the suspect's name or "Police!", from a significant distance. Suspect goes all Usain Bolt with a massive head start. Is this just a TV thing, or is there training behind it that I am missing?

    Thanx.

Technically Magnum is not a cop show, neither is Rockford files or Mannix, or Charlie's Angels.
The script said "long foot chase that indicates the hero's dedication and physical ability".

There used to be a training regimen back in the day. I believe it was titled, “Feets don’t fail me now!”

Magnum could never chase anyone down while carrying a 1911 in his waistband.

Almost every drama on TV is based on people making stupid decisions or taking stupid actions. Granted, many criminals are actually stupid, but as you've pointed out, the necessary stupid decision or action might also be written for the 'good guys' of the series.

Stupidity is written into (almost) every script...

Of course, in real life, I find stupidity all around me ---- so those scripts might be more realistic than it first seems...

Can't remember the name of the show, two dollies one a cop the other the medical examiner....near the end of one episode and older male cop points a shotgun at a suspect's head and announced "Boston PD, surrender or die". Effective messaging!
