Was gifted 1K of Indian OFV 7.62X51
A friend is selling off his neighbors deceased uncles ammo / reloading stuff etc etc.
I've helped him price out some stuff.
I've purchased quite a bit.
He showed me a box of Indian OFV and asked what it was worth.
A big assed red flag jumped up at me as I've done some research on this ammo.
A brief overview IIRC is the English set up India to produce 7.62 X 51 and other ammo.
While the UK initially oversaw the QC, ammo was good.
When they turned it over, everything wore out, QC went to hell and the ammo sucked ass.
I had purchased a K of 1975 OFV without even having a gun to shoot it out of. I also got a nice bit of South African.
The Indian was Boxer primed.
I did some googlefoo and thought I made a huge mistake buying this stuff until I read that in the early years it was decent.
I bought an FR8 and an Indian Ishapore 2A1 just to shoot this stuff.
Ok, jump to present. He had a K of 1986 OFV.
Google had bad stories about it. I told him a lot was over / undercharged, tar bullet sealing and tar in the powder etc etc. I told him I wasn't sure if the possible liabilty of and overcharged round could come back.
The owner did some research as well and decided to turn it over to the local PD for disposal.
There were reports of neck cracks, bad seating / crimping, primer issues as well as bad powder charges.
a couple days later I told him I would take it for components but it was already gone.
Another week past and she found another K of the same stuff dated 97.
She was going to shitcan that as well but my buddy asked if I still wanted it. I took it.
I pulled 10 bullets, weighed the charges which varied over 2 grains.
4 of the 10 had the same charge.
Weighing the total powder and dividing it by 10 came out to the same as the 4 similar charge weights.
I neck sized the cases, divided up the powder charges equally and reseated the bullets.
I have yet to shoot them but will chrono them and see how they group before continuing on this course.
I think getting the over charged rounds out will make this batch decent plinking ammo and brass is reloadable.

It would be some work and I might try shooting a few 10 shot strings in my PA10 to see how they would group and chrony.
It is however still a free K of X51 and I have some time.Opinions are like anal apertures. They all stink but mine.

2 grains in a rifle is nothing. I had a K of this stuff, cant remember what I did with it. At the very least,
salvage the bullets and recycle the brass. If the powder is good, keep that too.

There's a very informative thread and info on the good years of Indian ammo , and what to avoid over on the M-14 forum.
I don't speak English , I talk American!

That plastic core ammo is going for .75 a round on broker. I bought a case (1k) of it back in the 90s.
I guess I shot it all, cant find it in my stash.

I believe that may be where I read some of the info on that stuff.
A few sites have touched on it. THR had a shorter thread on it too.
The 75 shoots decently. I've not had a single failure.
I found quite a bit of the blue plastic x51. The 10 grain bullet chronod about 4K. The smaller head doesn't feed well in my PA10.Opinions are like anal apertures. They all stink but mine.

It's too bad Hipoint doesn't make a .308. If they did you could just shoot the stuff.
