Re: Looking for basic bolt gun
The Remington 788 is the forgotten gem of Rem bolt guns. I have a 243 & 308. Both are absolutely incredible to carry and are very accurate! Bolts are smooth but in 308 with their light stocks, they have more kick than a 700 does. They are harder to find on the used racks because most hunters know how well they shoot and how strong the actions are.
Engineers make things idiot proof! Evolution makes better idiots!

Re: Looking for basic bolt gun
Had a Rem 788 in .308 that was a hand-me-down from the FIL. Wouldn't consistently chamber 7.62 and had to send it to a gunsmith to get the bolt handle fixed. Evidently that was a common problem with the 788. Very accurate with anything it would feed, though. Took a couple deer with it and passed it on.
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will...

Whatever you do, stay away from the scope combo deals. You'll never get a quality scope that way. It doesn't matter what you choose, if you put a $100 piece of crap scope on it it will only shoot like a $100 piece of crap rifle.

Re: Looking for basic bolt gun
I ended up with a Savage 110 Switchback. I like that it has a box magazine, threaded barrel, Accutrigger and comes with a full pic rail. I went to the store thinking I was going to walk out with a Howa Hogue but to my surprise I hated the Hogue stock, it was way too sticky and it didn't have a removable magazine My second choice was a CVA for a few bucks less but it didn't have a threaded barrel. I loved the way the CVA felt and looked though.
Anyway, now I start researching rings and scopes. The Hostler

What no love for Thompson Center Venture? You get an accurate rifle, 5r rifling for easy cleaning and weather shield protection for 470 bucks.

Ok, I've got a Vortex Crossfire II, 4-12X50 AO on the way. I went with the Crossfire over the Diamondback because of the better eye relief of the Crossfire.
