I remember having to take any firearm I wanted to carry while hunting or fishing down to the courthouse. I *think* this was even if you had a LTCF. I could be wrong as it was back in the early 80*s after I got out of the USMC. They did away with that requirement and you only needed to apply for the SP.

The SP is beneficial to those 18-21 who wanted to carry a firearm while hunting, fishing or trapping because they were not old enough to get the LTCF. But for people who are 21, but don*t want to get a LTCF, it*s pretty silly. Just get the damn LTCF. Of course, dropping the age to get a LTCF to 18 would do away with the need for the SP in the first place.

Years ago , it was called a Provisional Firearms Registration. And the sheriff was in fact compiling a list of firearms , specifically handguns , snd their owners

So would removing age requirement completely via true Constitutional Carry.

It is also good for people handgun hunting in Pa that live out of state. When I lived in Delaware I had one.

I remember getting a Sportsman permit I think '83 and the only provision was it couldn't be a semi auto. I was told it could only be a revolver (rotator). Not sure that was true or not but I carried a revolver when fishing because that's what I was told. Today I make sure I completely understand the laws. I haven't had a Sportsman permit for many years now since I got an LCTF.

Who can apply for a Sportsman's Firearm Permit?

A person who is 18 years of age or older and is licensed to hunt, trap or fish, or who has been issued a permit relating to hunting dogs, may apply for a Sportsman's Firearm Permit by submitting a completed application along with the required fee to the county treasurer's office.

Prior to the 1995 uniform firearms act, permits were may issue not shall issue. It was certainly not as Constitutional to get a permit then as now and the Sportsman firearms permit allowed hunters to carry a revolver, for handgun hunting as I recall
