    Only the frame is serialized and regis er... I mean recorded on the Record of Sale. Hang whatever is legal for a pistol on it

    Yes you can do it, that person is wrong.

    The ATF is actively trying to change this though - right now. Do a quick Google search and find the proposal and leave a public comment opposing.

    Actually a lot of Euro-made pistols like my CZ-75s also have the ser.no. on the slide and barrel. The receiver is the only part that must be serialized.

    My Taurus PT1911s have the serial on the dust cover (frame), slide, and barrel. These 3 components are hand-fitted at the factory and serializing all of them keeps them together. That said: as abner pointed out, only the frame/receiver needs the number.
