Default I had my first (and hopefully last) case rupture

I was shooting my Ruger SR22 today and had a large puff of smoke and a stinging on my thumbs.

No injury thankfully. I don't think the gun even cares since i examined it and then fired the remaining 6 rounds in the magazine with no issue other than a dud round. The magazine didn't blow out of the gun or anything like I've seen with higher powered cartridges.

I was shooting a mixed batch of 22 but the particular round was a Winchester super X.

I'm not sure if it was an over charged round or the gun was out of battery.

It was definitely a show stopper as i needed pliers to remove the casing from the gun.

I have this question for the OP:

Is this "Winchester" Super-X ammo or is it "Western" Super-X ammo?

You said you also had a dud when shooting. Winchester ammo is no longer on my shopping lists since seeing the quality of their white box ammo in pistol calibers but I'm curious you aren't trying to shoot REAL OLD Western 22's. I've shot a lot of 30 to 50 year old rimfire shells and mostly have seen a few duds but not a case rupture. However, if there was some corrosion from sitting I could see this happening.

I bet that Winchester would like to have that case and the empty box from the ammo that would ID the Lot Number.

It was the Winchester bulk 22. Not some western variety. It isn't super old. But not new. Purchased within the last 10 years. Stored correctly in a sealed thunderbolt bucket of bullets with silica gel.

It is mine and they can't have it! Haha. Well they could except i have no idea what lot it was from. I poured the remainder of an open box into the bucket of bullets along with an open box of federal bulk. Trashed the boxes.
