I agree with Bang, that would be the easiest. I would start with the consignment route, then if they don't sell over the period of time the FFL and the seller agreed to, then if the seller really wants to just be done with them, sell them to the FFL for whatever the FFL will offer. If it turns out that the original person is cleared of everything and is not prohibited any more, then the FFL can return them (after a bcg - which is required) and the person has to pay the FFL whatever the consignment contract states for this situation.

Hypothetically, could one turn over their collection to an FFL who is also a gunsmith for a thorough "cleaning and safety inspection", and after that is complete, have them returned to a non-prohibited owner *without* a background check being done?

LOL!! Seriously??? Maybe look up dictionary definition of "return(ed)" ?

On second thought, it might work with the prohib's wife...which remains an unknown so far.
There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

Seriously. Gunsmiths ARE FFLs, and they routinely take in, and return guns with no background check being done. They use a separate bound book to log those guns in/out.

    That sounds doable.

Is the wife a prohibited person? If she isn't the easiest solution would be to buy a safe for the home that only she has access to. Put the guns in the safe and don't have her give him the combination. As long as he's got no access to the guns then it should be legal.

PS - I'm not a lawyer, just going off what generally has to be done if someone owns firearms and lives with a prohibited person.
