All my J and K frame snubbies wear Hogue Bantam grips. They tame even the 11.4 ounce 360.

As others pointed out , no they are not fun to shoot extensively unless you have grips that fit your hand. They are not range toys to run 100rds thru.

But they are 101% RELIABLE! Generally more accurate than any auto of similar size/weight/power.
I've got a 442, or an older model 60, or a Glock 42 that are my normal carry pieces. I can say the 442 is not pleasant to shoot with 38+p, but my steel 60 with Hogue grips is very pleasant, so it totally depends on the model of gun and the grips.
My G42 isn't a lot of fun to shoot either and it's pretty much a direct comparison to my 442 in size and weight and power, although it's a lot more accurate in my hands.

Ive read a few articles which say the Taurus is the best low cost option.
    Any opinions?
I have the 2 inch 856 matte stainless concealed hammer ultra light 6 shot and really like it. Solid, reliable, and good looking. You can also upgrade the front sight with this.

You can pick up a nice Ruger SP101 with a 2 1/4 barrel that shoots both for that price.

I would starting hunting a used Smith. I personally wouldn't trust my life to a Taurus or a Charter. I have a 2" Rossi I paid $250 for. It works, but I did not get it for a primary defense firearm. Guns are one of the few things these days that you actually get what you pay for.

Why not consider a Ruger SP101 3" barreled in .327 Federal Magnum? 3/4" more barrel isn't that much harder to conceal. It holds 6 shots instead of 5 and will eat any cal. .32 revolver cartridge from .32 S&W up to the magnum cartridge?

My wife has serious arthritis and problems racking slides. I got her a Ruger LCR in 327 with exposed hammer. She feeds it S&W .32 longs. She is comfortable and confident with it, practices and hits the target consistently.

I bought the M38 that is my daily carry for my aged Father when he could no longer work the slide on his pocket .380. He had no issue pulling the double action trigger a month before his death at 85.

Taurus 605 in 357. Heavy enough to not completely suck with 357s, and you can always shoot 38s. Want to say ~24oz unloaded. Picked mine up used with holster for $250. From what I recall, the 605 was an older/more reliable design than some of their other revolver models. Shares holsters and speed loaders with some of the S&W lot too.
