Default Strange thing on Mosin M44. Can anyone help identify it? (Photo)

This is the 1945 Izzy M44 my friend just bought. I mentioned it in an earlier thread. Does anyone know what this oval partial cut forward of the sling cutout might have been put in for? Thank you in advance for any information.

A repair is the only thing I can think of as well.

looks like a knot in the wood was removed and a plug glued in its place.

Thank you. Makes perfectly good sense when I think of the football shaped plugs in plywood.

The guy working in the factory on the stock was drunk and first cut the stock for the sling hole forward. When the inspector saw the error he started beating the guy around the head and told him to repair it. "The Motherland is depending on you to do things right the first time" he said and after being called out for the screw up he was summarily sent to the front.

It has depth. A repair would be level. I think something like a brass plate occupied it, possibly identifying the owner or the military company or regiment.

Someone installed a sling swivel, similar to TSMG, there and later plugged it when the swivel was removed. I've seen it on a number of TSMG fore grips and stocks. The Brits loved to do that.
