Question Keeping Dad away from the EDC

    Y'all,

Background: I have relocated to Mom & Dad's house (they've been in since 1969) to help Mom with Dad's increasing dementia. While just running around the house I keep my EDC (5" 1911) out of the way and kinda out of sight in "my" room, so I could have relatively quick access if needed.

Issue: Dad's on the downhill side of this experience. My room used to be their room for the first 20-25 years, then they moved into the slightly larger room that used to be mine and my brother's. Last night, Dad wandered into the wrong room to go to bed. I guided him out before he got more than a full step into the room.

Need: I need something convenient that will keep Dad away from the gun but give me quick access. I do NOT want anything with biometrics. Not at all a fan of RFID. I can live with batteries. Doesn't need to be hidden (from burglars) or weigh a ton, just a simple push-button locking box I can keep near my usual work (dining room) or recreation (living room) hangouts. There are no children who could play around and figure out a combination, so a simple 4-button would work.

Room for 2 pistols would be cool, but not required.

    Whatcha got?

I bought a V-line 2912-s about 7 years ago. I've kept my holstered edc's in there since. It can hold 2 easily (g26 and lc9s). It has a simplex lock system. I can open it one handed in the dark. Fast and easy. About $185.

I didn't want biometric or batteries or anything like that.

I bought one of these at Sam's Club on sale for $50. I just wanted something to keep 2 handguns in that would keep them away from the rugrats. Like you, I didnt want to mess with fingerprints. So far, it has done exactly what I need, but just as a fair warning, there is one major downside. If you booger up the code the first time, you might as well dig out the key, because it takes a while to reset before you can try entering the code in again.

Stack-on makes a single pistol lock box that uses a key that would probably work for you.

Just thinking outside the box here, if your dad is old and addled, it should be easy to hide the thing. Screw a holster to the underside of a low table or the bed, he's probably not bending down very easily. Put it in a shoebox on the top shelf of the closet, something where you need to step on a toolbox or something to reach it. Someplace where he's not going to go looking, so no candy boxes or porn stashes. Or just a screw-top container where you have to depress a tab to turn the lid. Ever see old folks try to open child-proof bottles? They ask the nearest child to open them.

If it were kids, then I'd say a key-operated safe, because kids are crafty and nimble. But it's EASY to hide things from people who keep losing their own watches and wallets and glasses.

I have a pistol safe that has a manual key and battery powered code. Forget who made it and I'm not home, but I would recommend something like that.
