Re: long-barreled pistol?
For the AR pistol to qualify as a "Firearm" for benefits of using a LTCF, the barrel must be less than 15" OR the overall length less than 26".
If the pistol excess BOTH measurements, then it would still be a pistol, but not a PA defined "Firearm".
A "Firearm" in PA is:
1. A pistol or revolver with a barrel less than 15".
2. A rifle with a barrel less than 16"
3. A shotgun with a barrel less than 18"
4. Any pistol, revolver, rifle, or shotgun with an overall length less than 26.
If your gun exceeds those measurements, then it isn't a "firearm" and cannot be carried loaded in a vehicle.RIP: SFN, 1861, twoeggsup, Lambo, jamesjo, JayBell, 32 Magnum, Pro2A, mrwildroot, dregan, Frenchy, Fragger, ungawa, Mtn Jack, Grapeshot, R.W.J., PennsyPlinker, Statkowski, Deanimator, roland, aubie515

Re: long-barreled pistol?
The grey area that I think you are eluding to is "non nfa items" like the mossberg 590 shockwave or the mare's leg. Arnold Schwarzenegger looks good with one but I'm not a fan of them.
I don't think you could convert your AR pistol into that category because doing so would violate the overall length part of the law. Has to be sold/manufactured in that configuration originally.
I think your options are:
A: SBR (can be loaded in vehicle; NFA)
B: Fully convert to rifle (can no longer be loaded in your vehicle)
C: Pin and weld suppressor on 12.5 < 16" barrel (still can't be loaded in vehicle; Non-NFA(suppressor still is); Has some legal privileges when traveling between states I believe)
D: pull the brace off and try something else like pushing against a 1 point sling.
Not legal advice.
