If your name is Marcellus Glephlarshnem, the SSN probably doesn*t do much. If your name is John Smith it might save you a bit of appeal hassle.

That is my name, no wonder I never have any trouble.

Thanks all - I genarally avoid using it for non-tax purposes, just on principle, but just because federal law requires any official non-tax form request to say "optional," doesn't mean it's always treated as optional.

It is optional, thanks to Mike Stollenwerk suing the PSP (Stollenwerk v. Miller, Civil Action No. 04-5510).

In 2006 a ruling was issued stating that the (prior) PSP requirement was invalid under the Federal Privacy Act.

*You know your an old-timer here if you actually know who Mike Stollenwork is.

Before getting married and moving out of folks house in my early 20s I had numerous instances of Dad (Jr.) and I (3rd, or III) getting things messed up. The worst was when I sent in the check (remember, ~35 years ago) for my motorcycle insurance with my full name preprinted and my policy number hand written *on the check*. They applied the amount to his policy, making him paid in full for about 4 years, and cancelled mine, then didn't want to fix it because they weren't taking any new accounts at the time. I raised holy hell and "won". I am now staying with the folks (same house for 52 years now) to help out as Dad's dementia worsens and Mom's memory starts to go.

All that to say: I don't believe that Dad has anything on his record that would cause issues for me on a background check, but I have no desire to fix anything that could happen. Besides, I was in the Army - .gov already has my SSN, my prints, and my DNA.
