If your kids are picking locks on your gun safe you got bigger issues than any lock can solve.

Which is exactly why one shouldn't rely upon a cheap lock. Sadly, every single pistol safe out there uses these or even worse locks, like wafer cores. Many people think the tubular locks are good because they're used on vending machines and they certainly wouldn't use crap locks on devices such as those.
I started picking locks at 9yrs old using a paperclip, but not to get into a gun, but to get to the comic books my brother would lock up.Rules are written in the stone,

Anyone that goes to the trouble to learn how to pick a lock - no matter how simple - is determined. These nightstand "safes" are meant to keep your kids from easy access to your gun. If they figured out how to get around your security, then you need to come up with a better system. Or get rid of the kids. Or the guns. I prefer the former.

You can change out the locks on many lock boxes from those tubular locks to double wafer locks which are a little harder to pick or a Duo, Medco or abloy cam locks. You just have get the right length and diameter for the replacement. I changed the tubular lock out on my Hornady vehicle Lock box to a double wafer lock. At least you can't open one of those with a ballpoint pen. You need some lock picking knowledge and it won't rake.

Re: Night stand pistol safe options?
I have used the Gunvault boxes shown above. Warning though, after a year or so, the contacts on the push buttons start to wear out. I was using it at least twice daily to access and return my CCW to the box. Once they start wearing out, you cannot quickly access the box. You then have to slowly push the buttons, taking at least 5-10 seconds to get in. This has happened on three that I have owned. Forget their biometric. They work or don't depending on how dirty or oily your fingers are when you program it or use it later. I have given up on their models. I have gone to the Verify Smart Safe S5000. Got it through Amazon. Yes, more expensive. However it has only failed to open twice, and both times it was me. I have used this for three years now and would not use anything else.
