Road trip to NY State with a rifle/shotgun?
We’re headed up to the finger lakes soon for a short roadtrip. We’ll be van camping out in the state forest so we would like something with us. I tried looking up the current laws but too much old info out there. I know handgun are off limits but what about rifles and shotgun? I know you can pass through the state with them but what about a road-trip inside the state ?
The guns In question would be a Yugo M48 and Mossberg 590a1
Thanks,

What state forest? If you mean state parks you'd probably be wise to check their regulations directly. Also you can call NY State Police and ask the questions, even without giving them your name.

Looking at finger lakes National forest but open to anything within a reasonable distance to the lakes. Friends of ours rented a cabin on a lake so we’re just going to be hanging out with them a bit then heading back into the forest.

OKAY. If I'm not mistaken that is the site of the old Seneca Army Depot, now a National Forest operated by the US Forest Service. They have an office right on on the main road (RTE 414 a bit north of Watkins Glen on the East side of the road) and you should call them and see what they say about firearms on National Forest land during non-hunting seasons. Watkins Glen State Park is interesting also. So are the auto races if you're there at the right time.

Re: Road trip to NY State with a rifle/shotgun?
When I used to go to NYS I would toss my Mossberg 500 in the trunk with ammo in a separate container. No pistol grip or scary features, just a basic shotgun. That used to be legal but I don’t know their current laws.
Make sure you hike the Glen trail. Hike from top to bottom if you dont like going up a lot of steps.
If you make it over to Ithaca check out Ithaca Falls Natural Area (epic waterfall) and I recommend a breakfast sandwich from Collegetown Bagels on E State St.
Bully Hill winery is worth a stop if you like wine. Probably my favorite winery up there.
Glen Curtiss museum has amazing aviation and military history.
Corning glass museum is also cool if you have time.

I’ll start off by saying I know pretty much nothing about NY gun laws other than they’re likely similar to their other liberal neighbors NJ/CT/MA. But after a quick look at this guide:
https://handgunlaw.us/states/newyork.pdf
It appears firearms are banned in NY state parks

I would definitely check with local
LEO. Even though I am a LEO, I was cautious about where and what I carried. I’ve heard a mix on what I was and was not allowed to carry even under LEOSA.

Ha! Check with local LEO. That's a great idea.
While you're at it, get your use of force and firearm advice from the guy behind the counter of your local gun shop.
