I*m wondering if the powder shortage drove the reloader to a new powder that they had no familiarity with? Or perhaps pistol powder was all they could get... it would be awful easy to double charge pistol powder in .45-70, even if you looked in the case to *verify* the load.

Think about how much pressure it would take to blow up a BFR. Those thinks are beasts.
I shot one at a group shoot. I think it was Ducati Ron's.

45-70 is a huge case and the posted "online" posts/lists for it's loadings show both slow and fast burning powders which could cause a novice or someone new to the 45-70 a lot of room for a mistake. Purely speculation on my part. The case is huge and the ability to double a charge on a case is very real. We could all armchair the possibilities but in the end, it's just a shame it happened.
