BBL. length question
I am going to SBR (legally) an AR in 5.56. Upper has a mid length gas tube. How short, past the gas block, can the barrel be and still function ? Anyone with experience on this? Most of the AR pistols I have seen either have a carbine length gas tube or a pistol length. Depends on how short the barrel is.

Re: BBL. length question
A mid length gas system is tuned to a 16 inch barrel. You could go to a 14 inch barrel without noticing anything but much shorter starts to get iffy. You need enough time after the bullet passes the port to get the bolt moving. I am sure you could eventually get a shorter barrel to work with different buffers or an adjustable gas block but my question is why? Just buy a pistol or carbine barrel with components that have been proven to work. They are not expensive and will save you a lot of aggravation.

Re: BBL. length question
Thank you for the reply. Problem is that barrels are in short supply. The reason I am asking for info on how short I can go with the existing barrel.

Re: BBL. length question
Keep in mind even with a 10" barrel the OAL of an SBR AR is about the same as a Tavor.

Re: BBL. length question
I have a 11.5" Faxon gunner barrel awaiting install. Midlength gas. Should be interesting. Going to run a Superlative Arms adjustable gas block, and JP captured buffer spring. Eventually suppressed.
Back on topic, the faxon gunner, 11.5", with midlength gas is a proven setup, granted everything else falls in place.
So, theres a ton of variables to account for, lmaoMostly browsing these days, and expanding the collection.

Re: BBL. length question
So let us know how it works out . AFAIK the Faxon mid length barrels are made to run suppressed. There is not enough dwell time with out a suppressor to get it to run without an adjustable gas block and some tweaks (and a thousand dollars worth of ammo to make sure the teaks run).

Re: BBL. length question
The Faxon barrel (I have one) has a huge gas port, so it'll run unsuppressed.
