US Government selling new guns directly to the public
Yeah, that was click bait.
The latest American Rifleman has an article about a government program back in the 1920s (I think) in which NRA members could buy a brand new, government issue 1911 for about $16. Adjusted for inflation that's about $220 today. A new Colt 1911 for $220.
It shows how differently society in general viewed guns 100 years ago and how differently the NRA was viewed.
Can you imagine the uproar if the government was selling M17s for $210 (supposedly the contract price)?

Re: US Government selling new guns directly to the public
Pretty much. In the days of DCM you could get an M1 for less than $200 (if memory serves, I paid $185. I'll have to look at my paperwork). They also shipped them out in a first come first serve basis. All were guaranteed to be serviceable but there were unissued ones mixed in. They'd just grab a box and slap a label on it. None of this grading jazz.
The program in the article was for NEW unissued 1911s.

Re: US Government selling new guns directly to the public
In the mid 60's 1911's were $17.50 and M1 Carbines were $22-25.00 from DCM. Should have bought a boat load. Monkey wards sold Mauser's for $19.95 and Johnson's were $39.95. I bought a Jap paratroop 6.5 for $7.50 and got laughed at for paying so much as most Jap rifles sold for $2.50-5.00.
Just to put this in prospective gas was .19 a gallon and Mc D's hambergers sold for 6 for a dollar.Courage is being scared to death--but saddling up any way. John Wayne

Friend of mine from the gun club has been in the CMP for years. He*s 87 and has shot in and volunteered in countless shoots at Camp Perry over the years.
He*s an authority on the M1 Garand and has one of his M1s willed to me... Special Grade.

Re: US Government selling new guns directly to the public
That's amazing!
People do this because they see someone else who appreciates their interests.
My best friend, of some 60 years, was willed 35 acres in New Hamsphire, because of his love for flyfishing, and the stream that runs through the property, by someone who shared the same passion.
My friend had no idea, until a lawyer contacted him.
