Default Tennessee Becomes 20th State to End Concealed Carry Permit Requirement

Tennessee makes number 20 to pass Constitutional Carry. (Currently applies to handguns only.)

The others are: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Note: this goes into effect July 1.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) * Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has signed the state's constitutional carry bill into law.

"I signed constitutional carry today because it shouldn*t be hard for law-abiding Tennesseans to exercise their #2A rights," Lee wrote in a tweet. "Thank you members of the General Assembly and (the National Rifle Association) for helping get this done."

The new measure means Tennesseans of certain ages will no longer have to apply for a permit or go through the required safety courses to legally carry a handgun.

People would have to be 21 to legally carry, or 18 if you're active duty military, and there would be restrictions against people with certain convictions like DUI's and stalking.

*This bill is a great step forward in the advancement of self-defense rights and Second Amendment freedoms for all Tennessee gun owners,* said NRA-ILA Executive Director Jason Ouimet. *It simply means law-abiding Tennessean*s no longer have to pay a tax to exercise the right of self-protection.*

Passing of the bill means stealing a gun would become a minimum class E felony, and if you are convicted of stealing a gun, you would have to serve a minimum of six months in jail * far more than the 30 days you*d currently receive.

Law enforcement has come out against the bill in part because Federal background checks amount to a last line of defense without the state requiring a permit.

Law enforcement knows damn well from the FBI data that criminals aren't typically buying their guns legally from FFLs and they aren't applying for concealed carry permits either. Most are stolen or bought on black market from others who have obtained them illegally. That comment at the end is just bullshit.

I'm confused, does the bill have anything to do with background checks?

I doubt it, prolly just a typical case of (D) "journalists" with no f***ing clue what they're talking about. These people sincerely believe it's easy for anyone to buy a gun, and clearly they've never done it themselves.

However, law enforcement groups — including police chiefs, sheriffs and prosecutors — have largely opposed the move and consider the state’s existing permit system an important safeguard for knowing who should or shouldn’t be carrying a gun.
In other words, the (Democrat) political hacks that are part of the Law Enforcement sector are all for more control and less respect for the Constitutional Rights of THE PEOPLE!
