Default Mossberg Shockwave, What Gauge, Worth Buying?

Well guys, I searched and didn't find what I was after.

I don't own a shotgun...which I suppose means I need one. Not necessarily for home defense.

I was thinking I'd like a Shockwave, just because. While I've never fired one, I think they're cool. And, I figure it's a matter of time before rules change and they cannot be sold any longer. Which, was one of the reasons I was considering one now.

To keep this short, some friends say only buy a 12g version...when I was considering a 20g. Talking to a local LGS, they actually suggested that if I wanted a shotgun to shoot for fun...that there were many better choices. In their opinion, it wasn't a great gun to shoot.

In the end, I'm hoping for some thoughts from folks that have experience with these. I really only buy stuff I can use and enjoy.

In my view, you got good advice from the LGS. I never owned a shockwave but I did own AOW shotgun with a 12 in barrel with no stock. I was bored with it within days. I'm thankful I managed to sell it before the shockwaves and it's clones hit the market. If you want something small maybe consider a bullpup shotgun.

A Shockwave isn't a substitute for a proper stocked shotgun, and what it's designed to do.
That being said, I have both the 12ga and 20ga versions, that I will take to my local casual clay shoot when we have it, and attempt to bust a clay or two, with varying degrees of success.

In my opinion, the Shockwave style shotguns are a single function type shotgun. I would echo what the LGS said. Get a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 and if you want to set it up for home defense you can buy 18 1/2" barrels for them, they're easy to swap out. Then you can get the full functionality out of the shotgun.

A Shockwave in factory form does nothing for me, especially at the current overinflated prices they are fetching now. They just aren't pleasant to shoot. I picked one up when they were >$300, and immediately form 1'd it. With the current market however, I'd be more inclined to track down an 18.5" variant like Xring mentioned.

That would be a good combo gun for someone new to shotguns, best of both worlds.

I would try to put your hands on a Remington 870P or a Mossberg 500/590 with an 18-20" barrel for a serious defensive shotgun. Shotguns are simple tools and it's best to keep them simple.

19"s of barrel, PLUS STOCK in a tight home for home defense? Hahaha

    Fuddly of you.

Shockwave with a folding brace all day for the house.
Would absolutely get rid of my mossberg for the old style Black aces tactical semi auto with box mags and brace.
