Default Gun cleaning tips and tricks

I thought it would be fun if we shared our less than typical tips and tricks to clean our guns. Maybe some sort of everyday household item or gadget that helps you.

Firstly, for my pistols, i use a melamine tray as a work surface. They are cheaper than gun mats and pretty well chemical resistant.

For cleaning a .357/.38 caliber revolver, i use a .40 caliber brush on the charge holes. I like the proshot tornado brush. The slightly larger brush really gets them clean.

For the carbon rings in the barrel side face of the cylinder, green scotchbrite pads work wonders - for stainless only.

I use the Hoppes lead remover cloth cut into small squares to remove carbon and powder residue from SS revolver cylinder, chambers, and barrel. Midway also had caliber size q-tips that work great for a quick cleaning of barrels.

I like the lead remover cloths, but they are not cheap if you shoot often.

I didn't know about the caliber sized qtips though. Really cool.

A compnay that makes/sells caliber size swabs, both like Q-Tips and ones that can screw on to a cleaning rod is called Swab-Its https://www.swab-its.com/

I use them in the shop because they can be cleaned and reused, and they are made in the US.

I remember the water in the showers in those old WWII barracks got so hot we could fill the upper receiver of the M-16 from muzzle to charging handle with shaving cream then rinse til clear with the shower and it would be dry in seconds. Just an oiled patch thru the bore and a drop of CLP rubbed onto the outside of the barrel and the upper was good to go.
