    Default AR10 with Vortex scope

Hi, I want to get your opinion about putting a Vortex Viper PST 5×25 scope on a WW .308 AR10 rifle with 16.5" barrel.
I'm planning to zero this set up in @ 100 yards and the max I'll shoot is 300 yards.
Some people say 16.5" inch barrel is too short for long distance shooting, some say get a bolt action rifle instead.
What do you think of this set up? WW 308(standard M4 handguards) , Vortex PST, with a Magpul bipod.

I have a Viper PST on my AR10 .308 and also on my AR10 6.5cm. Have shot both out to 600yrds effortlessly..

24", but that won't limit you much.

Your rifle and scope will do "fine" out to 300 yards. Beyond that, it really boils down to what level of accuracy you expect or desire out of that setup.
May I inquire what your accuracy goals are?

BTW, 300 yards is classified as "midrange".
I think you'd be a bit handicapped by that setup at 600 and beyond. But again it depends on what your accuracy goals are.

It's just for fun really, Im not competing or anything. The state game land ranges around me only go out to 300 yards, the one close to me is only 100. I'd like to hit the bullseye at least a few times out of say 5 shots.

Would a longer barrel, with its increased velocity, be better ? Sure.... but is that added length mandatory ? Nah.....

You'll be fine with your barrel length, especially at 300yds.

I can't comment on the precision of a WW barrel, but the barrel is easy to replace with a higher quality one if needed.

rule of thumb is 50fps per inch.

    so a load in a 18" shooting 2800
    would be 2700 in a 16"

For target it will only really make a difference when it goes subsonic and loses stability and as has been mentioned will be past 600.

The increased muzzle blast and fireball are my main objections to a 16.5in barrel on a .308 , or an 18 for that matter.
