Is there reason you don't want a bolt with a mag? I leave mags in with my older .22 bolts and let the nieces and nephews load 1 at a time from the top, it works fine with the older H&R, Stevens, Savage, and Mossberg rifles from the 30's thru '60's. Any one of them can be bought for less than $150 in decent shape.

I would never have expected my Savage plinker would become such a coveted item.

I've found with some mag fed bolt action 22's that they have a difficult time loading 22 short ammo even on an empty mag.
I like shooting 22 short a lot because it's as quite as a pellet gun and I can get away with shooting in my borough limits.
But if you know of a mag fed 22 that can load shorts on an empty mag, I'd be satisfied with getting one of those.

Wow, that would be nice. I'd need one that also shoots long and long rifle

Mossberg made a bolt gun in the 1960-70s which had an adjustable magazine so you could set it for LR or Shorts. (actually S,L,LR but longs are completely obsolete now)

My dad had one he bought for my brother back in the 1970s. I can't seem to find the model number listed doing a quick search but it had a pretty nice walnut stock and adjustable box magazine along with pressed checkering and black plastic trigger guard.

A125AA74-BD0A-4006-AF5C-146DE8944606.jpgI have one of these, a Marlin 925R with scope. With or without the scope, a great shooting little rifle. Mine came with two magazines, a longer and shorter one. I don’t know if this model is still available new. And just for the thread, I still have my dads old Springfield .22 single shot bolt action that was made around 1936. No scope, and still shooting after all these years.

Alright, I found five .22 shorts in the bottom of an old ziplock, still fairly decent. I pulled out a variety of bolt tube, bolt mag, lever, pump, and a semi to see what could be easily hand fed. Here*s what I found, best at the top:

Mossberg S42A, bolt, mag fed. Chamber lines up to the left against a wall, so easy drop in and rack.

Mossberg 42B bolt, mag fed. Almost as easy, small fingers a plus if you can help get the bullet set straight on the mag.

H&R 845 Plainsman, bolt with mag. Ok, but mag follower has a flat top, so you definitely need to start the bullet down the chamber. Decent space to work, but fat fingers may cause troubles. Removing the mag follower may help a ton.

Stevens 86C: bolt, tube fed (from front). love my stevens rifles, but the bullets tip/fall into the lift up mechanism and won*t feed properly.

Wards Western Field 489B (by mossberg). Tube fed via stock, but .22 LR only.

Stevens 75: pump, tube fed. Way to small to hand load!

Marlin 39A: lever, tube fed. Again, no space for a hand load.

Marlin 60SS: tube fed semi. Absolutely no way to get even small fingers in there!

    Pictures hit the 5 limit...

I would imagine many of the Mossberg variations that use that standard mag from the 30*s and 40*s would work. Many of the stocks were full size, I would guess for training on the M1 without the scarce and speedy ammo. Best of luck!

I have some old stuff up in me closet, would .22L have any use?
