    Question school me on chainsaws

I'm looking into getting a new saw. Can anyone give me some advice? I'm leaning towards a Stihl. I cut 6-7 cords a year and my poulan is getting worn out.

    Bortle,

I have a middle of the line Stihl. No problems in the 6 years I have owned it. I prefer an 18" cutting bar. Just seems to make the job go quicker.

I'll second that. I've had mine 15 yrs. now, don't use it alot lately, bought it for clearing my property. It fires up every time I need it though. They may cost a little more, but are worth every penny.

As stated, get a Stihl or a Husky and be done with it.
I have a Stihl with a 22" bar and it's been around before bar breaks and other "safety" standards. It out rips anything and fires up everytime.

I cut for a living... and use both Stihl and Husky. For 6-7 cord a year a Stihl Farmboss would be nice. How much do you want to spend? Their pro models have a better power to weight ratio, but you'll pay. If you buy a Husky get one at a dealer that can do repairs on site (not a box store).

First off how much do you want to spend?

I work at a Stihl dealership and if you have any questions please feel free to ask!

During 20yrs in the tree business, I've burned through more than a few low quality saws. IMHO, go with Stihl, Husqvarna is a close second. I second the Farm Boss idea. The pro series are great, if you use them daily, but they are salty. Go to a dealer, handle the merchandise, get an idea how the saw feels to handle. Weight and balance are a factor. Look for the lighter, more powerful saw. If you get a Stihl, use only Bosch spark plugs, and Stihl 2 cycle mixing oil. Also clean the air filter religiously.

Almost exactly my thoughts. 5 years on a crew, and the only problem we ever had with one of the Stihls was when a climbers snap broke and his climbing saw fell 30 ft and cracked the gas tank. Farm Boss will do you right.

I second what everyone else said..... I own a Husqvarna and have used Stihls. Thats what I chose based on what I wanted to spend and how much I use it. You can find deals on Husqvarna's online. I dont believe Stihl allows that. If you go with a Husqy check out Southwest Trading at www.toolsineed.com . They usually have good deals or throw in an extra chain and other stuff.
Now if you're looking for a cutoff/chopsaw..... get a stihl
