AR Hammer Pin Hole Slightly "Egg" Shaped
Well guys, as the title says...one of the hammer's pin holes in the lower is slightly elongated. I'm not sure how this occurred, as I used the jig.
Using regular pins, the hammer is slightly tilted when in the most forward position. Meaning, it will hit the bolt more to one side than the other. I can rotate it into the correct position if I hold the hammer with pliers and twist. It's very slight, but enough to seemingly correct.
I should add that I haven't yet fired it as I am waiting for a buffer and spring to arrive. I found all this assembling the lower and fitting the upper. Perhaps it would function, but I'm thinking long term this isn't right.
I installed a set of Elftman Anti Rotation Pins. These can hold the hammer to the correct position, but I feel slight movement if I place my finger on the pin while moving the hammer. My thinking is that this set up isn't rigid enough to keep the pin from moving fore-aft.
Glad for your thoughts, my assumption is a drip in trigger may be my best alternative.

Re: AR Hammer Pin Hole Slightly "Egg" Shaped
Your best bet is to drill the hole oversize and press/locktite a plug in and then re-drill it. It is going to wear. The military started issuing hammer/trigger pin hole gauges in their gauge sets because of the problems caused by oversize holes. The problem mostly started with H&R receivers because of poor machining, but the pins do rotate just from functioning. It can cause burst fire and rarely total uncontrolled fire.

Re: AR Hammer Pin Hole Slightly "Egg" Shaped
If you haven't fired it, it's because you messed something up when you drilled the hole. If it's egged out out after use, it's because the hammer and trigger pins get walloped by the bolt carrier when the gun cycles. The transferred energy to the pins smacks the snot out of them and over time eggs out the holes. That's one of the reason the military calls for hard coat anodizing on the lower- the hard coat toughens up the inside of the holes.
An 80% left in the white is butter soft and will egg out quickly. Cerocote or any of the other spray on, floor paint type finishes are equally useless to prolong the life of the holes. The problem is only made worse by the off-spec parts and crappy lowers (anderson, delton windham, etc)that are currently clogging the market. Not to mention the off spec hole locations when Bubbah tries to finish an 80%lower.Crusader's local #556 South Central Asia chapter

Re: AR Hammer Pin Hole Slightly "Egg" Shaped
Thanks everyone! There's no doubt the hole is my fault.
I was hoping the fix was as easy as a drop in trigger....off to find one!
I'll post a pic when it's done...

Re: AR Hammer Pin Hole Slightly "Egg" Shaped
What about filing a little off the edge of the hammer where it is hitting the bolt. Just enough for clearance, unless its really bad.
