Just plain weird. What about a taser? What about pepper spray. How about a nice kick to the mid section? At least bum-rush the old dude and take out his legs. What the hell kind of stick was that anyway? It broke pretty easily.

Of course common sense applies. Common sense should have told the officer to close with the guy and engage him with nightstick, blackjack, sap gloves, twister-cuff, taser, stun gun, pepper spray, or bean bag projectile or other less lethal, less than lethal or non-lethal implement at his disposal. If none of those were available for the Officer's use, the Department is at fault.
