Default Mossberg Plinkster 702 firing problem.

I bought a used Mossberg 702 Plinkster today( $40 ), And it has no magazine with it. So I loaded a single round in and did not fire. Tried 2 different ammos and same problem. The firing pin is hitting way out on the outer part of the rim not enough to set the primer off. I cleaned the gun and looked it over I can't see any thing broken or worn out. This might sound dumb and I don't have any experience with these type of guns. But can this be because of the magazine is not in it. Looking thou the mag well the firing pin is visible its directly up from where the next round is and the follower would be. It almost looks like the pin would be pushed up with a round or follower hitting it. I tried to google and do a search and nothing. Thanks for any help!!

If I had a way to walk out my back door and shoot it, I'd try to shoot mine without a mag to see what happens.

I bought one of those 25 rd mags for it way back when, but had no luck with it.
The standard mags work just fine.
Not a bad rifle for the money. Especially for $40!
I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

That rifle does not have a mag safety. At least not the ones I have seen.
a photo of the firing pin hit on a cartridge might help.

Could also be a worn firing pin not enough meat to ignite primer properly.

That much play in the firing pin is almost certainly your problem. I don't recall what people use on 10/22's, but i have heard of people wedging things into the firing pin canal to keep it in line. Personally never saw the need on a 10/22.

Is there a missing or broken retainer on that firing pin?

No spring at all? I wonder if it is missing a part. Anybody have a schematic of the bolt?
