Lights Out???
With all the current interest in SHTF, I'm curious how many members here read the fiction online book called "Lights Out"? And no I'm NOT a member at the squirrel site.

Re: Lights Out???
Lights Out is a great book.
If you read it, take 5 seconds to email the author thanking him for his efforts. He really appreciates that sort of thing.==============
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquillity of servitude than the animating contest of freedom, — go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen!”
~Samuel Adams
"I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it."

Re: Lights Out???
Lights out is an OK book, fairly well done.
however, if you want to read a SHTF book with long tem effects, read the book series by SM Stirling called "Dies the Fire".
some event has changed the laws of Physics,.
gunfire doesn't burn, electricity doesn't saprk, even steam engines wont build pressure.
we're back to pre-industrial age overnight.
the books are fascinating, and even delves into how the govt does or does not handle the issue...and what types of govts spring up after.
"Lights out" is a spring break party compared to the above book."Oderint Dum Metuant" - BMFH

Re: Lights Out???
The fifth book in the series was just released back in September.
If you like SF, Military SF or alternate history type stuff you can't go wrong with S.M. Stirling. His Island in the Sea of Time trilogy is related to the Dies the Fire Series. Nantucket is transported to the Bronze Age in the same Event that caused the Change. Many exciting battles ensue. Excellent stuff.

I am a "Squirrel" from way back, not very active anymore though.
"Lights Out" was a good one, I liked "Pax Americana" more....it is supposedly finished but you have to order the book to read the end.
"Enemies Foreign and Domestic" was great also, eagerly awaiting the 3rd book in that series.
"Unitended Consequences" also good.
Stephen King's "The Stand" was ok, more for entertainment, not so much for any strategic/planning info though.
I find SHTF books quite helpful, if not for the entertainment, at least thought provoking for getting a person prepared for at least a small disruption. Like a hurricane or a blizzard that screws up "normal" life for just a few days.
How many (or how few) people are really prepared for a realistic 1 week disruption due to a blizzard...no power, water, no way to get to market etc..

Re: Lights Out???
I started it last night and got through the first 200 pages thus far... it's okay, so far as it goes, but there's a distinct whiff of PC about it... which pretty much ruins things a little bit, considering how it's PC and conventional neocon values that pretty much got us into the mess of things to begin with... including the very convenient Arab oil sheik villain that opens up the whole show.
And imagine that... talk of cities being destroyed by riots... attempted car-jacking by three miscreants against one of the heroes... yet when they first visit to the ranch compound, the thing that concerns the women is that there's no "minority" representation.
Meh.
I'll keep reading it, just because I'm a fan of the genre, but there's nothing compelling yet.
