Many , if not most private clubs do background checks on applicants/prospective members.

Some do , some don't , especially if you have a valid LTCF. Can't be too careful these days.

It's redundant. Gun owners go through them to purchase a firearm, and also when getting their LTCF.

If they're that worried about people, just ask members or customers to have a LTCF. Show that and you're in.

Still, that's even a crap on the Constitution, but as far as liability for a business, that would be sufficient.

The club I belong to asks for a LTCF or a state police background check to join.

So you're OK with people who might be prohibited from possessing firearms joining your club? Not everyone purchases their guns thru legal channels. Especially those who are prohibited. Have an 'incident' with a member who is prohibited and the club could be liable , and even shut down.

My club has a capped membership , a set of by-laws , and a long waiting list to join. It can take years. Being recommended by 1 or more members in good standing can still help a prospective member bump the line.
An interview by the board of directors is also standard. Some applicants refused to submit to a background check , and were refused further consideration.

Background checks also make sense at rental ranges. Can't rent a firearm to a prohibited person now.

So, employees of liquor stores should have to do background checks so they are not providing alcohol to a DUI-prohibited drinker. Or employees of an agriculture supply should have to do background checks on purchasers of fertilizer who could be building a bomb.

I think if a prohibited person violates his prohibition, s/he is the liable one. Renting a car to a person who uses it as a getaway car in a robbery does not attach to the renter.
There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

most clubs around me do "back ground checks" because the club bylaws call for it. also you need 2 members to propose you. since almost every gun club by me was incorporated before the Pa. LCB was invented, and most have small games of chance / catering club lic. ( liquor Lic) the LCB will use this to issue citaions and fines if a back ground check has not taken place. However, since most clubs pre-date the inter- webs, there is no clause as to what defines a background check. for 10 years as a board member on a local gun club that had to do checks, I found GOOGLE with a name and address does the job just fine, and keeps the LCB off your back. Also, call the number that is on the application, we were hit 2 times in 15 years by LCB agents who snuck in under the radar, and even wrote the local State Police barracks number on the application. Since the advent of casinos in our area, the casinos pay the LCB for their time to try and catch every little glitch at a club, gun club or not, to try and pick away at their meager earnings from small games of chance.
Abner, Groucho Marx quoted "I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member." I would not want to be a member in the country club, ooops, shooting range that you are a member of.
i can and have passed multiple back ground checks in my life. if some one cant buy \ own a firearm it does not make every one of them a bad person, what makes them a bad person is how they live. We have ponds, and archery ranges, acres to hunt. Cant own a gun ? buy a xbow. cant buy a gun? buy a fishing pole. want a nice place to shoot archery, hunt, and fish with a beer in you hand? Hit me up ill see what i can go for you. I know a few things about shooting ranges / gun clubs.
    My 2 cents

So if they do a background check, do the results matter? I haven't seen any info on that.

For all we know, they might call the state police, and the cop says "Oh, John Doe? Yeah, we know him, he's a real asshole. Lots of run-ins with us."

...and then you can go ahead, check the "did a background check" box, and proceed as usual.
