    While we fully encourage people to fully engulf the HAM culture and become electronic wizards, there are "Ham in a Day" classes out there.
    These are good just to get yourself legal to jump on local VHF repeaters. If looking to go longer wave and distance, you'll need the step up the license class, and spend more money.

    As far as scanner, "Scanner Radio" app on your smart phone is pretty decent.

    +1 on Scanner Radio app. The app also notifies you if there is a spike in the number of listeners on a particular channel.

    I have the Android version but, yes, there is an iPhone version. It's "Police Scanner Radio & Fire" by GordonEdwards.net LLC. I paid the nominal fee to remove ads ("Pro" version)
