Default hand held digital scanner advice

Looking to spend the Gubberment's welfare check on a hand held scanner. Any advice on a good one that allows for monitoring the latest digital technologies?

"latest digital technologies", not really - most police departments are moving to P25, a digital trunking system that uses encrypted communications from a central server. Very much meant to not be listened to by the genpop. not sure there are much to them these days other than your standard scanning ability, I just listen to our local first responder dispatch on my baofeng handheld.

That's kinda what I thought. I don't know very much about them but I figured now would be a good time to get one. I don't want to buy something that ends up only good for a boat anchor.

It would benefit you much more to get an actual radio you can transmit with and get your HAM license. If you need a radio for an emergency, being able to communicate with others would be more beneficial IMO.

I don't know shit about ham either. I'm interested too. I know there have been a bunch of threads about the subject. I do own several BAOFENG transceivers, but learning how to operate is been on my to do list for quite awhile. I do understand you need a license to transmit.

I've had my license for 5 years and still haven't truly got into it until now, but there's some awesome knowledgeable people in this thread that will definitely be able to help get you started.
