    I have a preference for #1 buck over 00 or #4.
    12 .30 cal vs 9 .32 cal

Not as easy to find though.

Is it legal to rack a shotgun when an intruder is around to hear it, or is that considered intimidation?

"Sabots" like Accu-Tips are used in rifled slug barrels. In a smooth bore barrel you will not gain the accuracy they are capable of attaining. The actual projectile is often 40 caliber. These are the 40-cal projectile encased in a plastic sleeve roughly the diameter of the bore. The Sabot needs the rifled slug barrel to impart the spin. There are reports of 20-ga Accu-Tips providing adequate hunting-sized groups out to 200 yds.

I don't see a value of using either, inside a house for "home defense". This is due to limited distances inside the house, and the high probability of overpenetration.

Unless a 800-lb grizzly is INSIDE your house, which in PA means it must have escaped from the Philadelphia Zoo...

Like everything else, using a shotgun for home defense requires practice. Extended practice sessions with a 12ga pump shotgun is not my idea of fun.

Pumps can jamb, contrary to popular belief. I have experienced the empty shell jamming in the chamber (I had to pogo the stock on a tree) and having the shell slip out of the magazine and induce a condition with two shells on the liftgate (shove one bag in the magazine; it hurts).

The best asset of using a shotgun in home defense is you are less likely to make nationwide news, vs. an "Evil AR-15."
Those twisted grooves really dont impart much if any spin. In some tests they got about 1/2 rotation in 25yds past the barrel. They are there primarily to allow it to swage to the bore and through chokes to seal it with less overall deformation.

The nose-heavy/hollow base design doesn't require spine because the mass is at/near the forward-most point of the projectile. Rifling is needed is when a projectile's mass is behind the nose of the bullet. The most massive part wants to lead in flight, to keep a projectile from tumbling because of mass being behind the nose, spin is applied(by rifling).

My defense shotgun routine is 2 rounds of 00 buck up close and personal followed by slugs if the perp wants to turn around and return fire.

It depends on if you're in the woods or not. If you're in the woods and there is NO intruder to hear it, does it even make a sound? Also, as a male, if you're in the woods and you say something and there is no woman to hear it, are you still wrong? The actual answer is, it shouldn't be and is considered one of the reasons to have a pump shotty - but there are always lawyers who may try to make a case of it.
