Looking at the history of population growth of the "Atlanta region", there were 2+ million in the '70s and 6+million now. The increased population is from adjacent counties being brought into the inclusion in two waves over the years. I presume that is expansion of city into suburbia. That may be a base cause of loss of redness.

Like so much else associated with the decline of our nation, the current debates about what went wrong and what should be done in the future is a myopic discussion. It is concentrated on how best these party animals ought to play the disgusting GAME of party politics in order to win. In the same way that LYING has been normalized for the past 30 years (think Clinton) we are now seeing that violating any rules (or overturning rules of fairness and truth) that are necessary to WIN is being fully embraced.

No matter the truth of the 'stolen election', far too many in society are complicit with the 'win at all costs' nature of the political party system. Attack, Lie, Cheat, Distort. Currently, the Left has shown its ability to do just that and win. And the Political Right does the same with less success. It is now considering and being encouraged to embrace the same 'win at all costs' attitude.

The outrageous fictional government of the book, 1984, is coming true before our eyes, as more and more people embrace socialism. Despite the insight, identified to happen 40-years ago, these socialists believe that their lives will be better when the government is able to settle all the problems they encounter in life. Yet, those who have previously lived under the fully developed socialist governments, as proposed, desperately have sought out the freedom that previously existed in America. They risked their lives in many cases to reach it.

The calls for the party animals to be more crafty and devious in order to win will simply extend the game indefinitely, while the country loses the essence of it's founding, the recognizion of Individual Liberty. The majority of the political animals, on both (or all) sides of the political landscape, have been tutored to play the game. They have no principles, nor believe in the Founded Republic, Of the People, By the People and For the People.

No amount of craftiness or devious planning will heal the sickness in American politics. The power pendulum may swing back and forth between various parties or power groups (think billionaires), but the power thusly obtained will not be exercised to the benefit of The People. Any small benefit that may drip from that expansive smorgasbord of power will only be by chance and due to its extraneous nature.

I fear that the true nature of the Republic, individual freedom, is being lost forever as so few (either of the Public or of the Political) ever think in those terms. The lack of tolerance for any disagreement illuminates the current situation. The very cancel culture we see happening around us is evidence that the populace itself is being constantly schooled in the ways of socialism, with no tolerance for individual freedom. The attacks are not only related to actions being made unacceptable (or illegal) but even the expression of unacceptable thoughts is assailed (and might be, now or later, punished by 'Hate Crime' status).

Orwell was not prognosticating based on some private holy vision of truth he received in the night, but on a simple observation of the existing socialism around the world in his own time coupled with his expectation of highly advanced technologies used for enhancing the nefarious purposes of that soul-destroying system.

And today, we need only look at the internal lack of freedom in China, in so far as we can penetrate the facade it puts in place. This is the future of America as that system is sold to the populace and the Chinese Communists continue to buy influence in industry, education, entertainment & our government.

So - all the discussion of party politics and how to win, is really a distraction from the larger, more all-encompassing, destruction that is taking place.

^^ Wow. Excellent post, ImminentDanger. We are increasingly conditioned to point fingers at the "other" party, and especially their leaders (Trump, McConnell, Pelosi, Schummer, etc.), which is as much a distraction as anything. I am more worried about the power of the mass media and social media entities. Those huge corporations can basically control what we see and hear, and, thereby to a large extent, heavily influence what we think. Higher education and even secondary education play into it, as well.

Orwell warned of an omnipotent and diabolical government. While that warning still has merit, we should add the omnipotent and diabolical media entities.

The Cliffnotes site identifies Orwell as a socialist. But more accurately, he should be identified as a naive socialist, like so many today, who embrace socialism but eschew totalitarianism, at least in theory. Although he wrote and warned about the results of totalitarianism, as they were fresh to his mind, he seems not to have perceived that socialism, communism and totalitarianism are all on the same vector of philosophical control. Perhaps he was still too young (47 at his death) to have crossed over from liberalism to conservatism, as age, experience and better vision, seems to bring about. As world experience has shown, it is important to confront these ideologies while they are still new to the people or they will insidiously take over and be difficult to uproot after they bloom into their full results. A more concerted effort must take place in America to speak out about the founding principles of Freedom based on Individual Liberty.

I won't quote all the many good references about the book, 1984, at the Cliffnotes site, but these, taken from different pages, are representative.

"It is important to remember that Orwell based 1984 on the facts as he knew them; hunger, shortages, and repression actually happened as a result of the extreme governmental policies of these countries. The war hysteria, the destruction of the family unit, the persecution of "free thinkers" or those who were "different" or not easily assimilated into the party doctrine, the changing of history to suit the party's agenda, were all too real. Orwell's speculation of the future is actually a creative extension of how the masses were treated under Franco, Hitler, and Stalin."

"Through his creation and explanation of Newspeak, Orwell warns the reader that a government that creates the language and mandates how it is used can control the minds of its citizens."

This is the role of our current media.

Also, notice that just this week, the House rules were changed to implement Newspeak regarding gender terms. And liberal organizations regularly use deceptive naming, such as 'Everytown for Gun Safety', as a propaganda tool to disguise the truth of the goals of the participants. The news media supresses actual events that they wish did not exist and broadcast, with great distortion, events that they perceive will further their agenda. And they are not beyond creating out of whole cloth stories that have no basis in reality.

The more I've thought about this recently, the more I think you're correct. If we had a balanced and fair media, I suspect the politician problem would self-resolve. As it is now, media covers over their outrageous behavior and brainwashes the sheeple into believing everything is good and normal. We need to find a way to influence media types towards fair coverage.
