Remington 700 Series?
I've been told years ago the 700 was a great budget bolt action rifle for more long distance shooting. I was looking to get into longer range shooting, entry level and wanted something sub $1k. It seems like less and less people recommend it anymore, to be honest all I'm hearing is to stay away from them now. Is there a year where they went to shit to something? Any opinions on these things from anyone who has or had one?

Re: Remington 700 Series?
700 is a great action. And alot of guns run a clone of a 700 action. But in today's world there are many guns (because of CNC manufacturing) that will yield equal results.
If your starting from scratch buy a Ruger Precision Rifle. I'd say best bang for the buck out there for 1200ish
Better than buying an old Rem for $500, gunsmithing the reciever and rebarreling it for another thousand or so bucks.
If you really want a Rem 700 action look at Sendaro (sp?) Rifles.www.Steelvalleycasting.com is your new home for coated bullets and custom ammo.

Re: Remington 700 Series?
Savage 10/110 based tactical/target/varmint rifles have been shooting tiny groups and have very comfortable price tags.

Re: Remington 700 Series?
I don't associate the Remington 700 with 'budget', but that depends on what you are comparing it with. (This does not apply to 7XX where XX is other than 00). Remington made a very good rifle going way back, and like many brands got bought out and 'modernized' manufacturing was applied with negative results on the quality of the result. Much like JM Marlins versus newer production if you are familiar with that story. Same culprits involved in both...
I have a 700 LH rifle from the 1980s in 243 that I have used for whacking woodchucks out to 300 plus paced yards, using a bipod rest. I don't know exactly when the decline began, but for rifles from the 1980s and earlier are darn good rifles. Without knowing what you call long distance shooting, it is hard to tell you what to do, but there are folks on here who will suggest some good ideas for your quest. Good luck and let us know how it goes.Illegitimus non carborundum est

Re: Remington 700 Series?
Well , Remington made over 6 million of them , and older rifles have become rather cheap , and their actions get used for custom builds. I picked up a .222 Rem with a horrible bore and ugly stock for $200 awhile ago for a project.

Walks and sits are good. I don't complain. Any day out in the woods beats a day at the office.

I like that description, and when I go to deer camp beer gets consumed nightly, but still, no one gets hurt!
