Smith and Wesson model 17, A nice .22 revolver is great, K frame and then a 38-357 revolver, Also Smith and Wesson K frame,
Practice with the 17 and be a better shooter with you larger caliper revolver,

Everyone should have at least one .22lr pistol. The Kel Tec P-17 is the bang for your buck in the semi-auto category. The Ruger MK IV and Kel Tec CP33 are more expensive, but also hella fun.

Can't discount a good .22lr revolver. I was against the GP100 in .22lr when it came out. Having shot one, now I want one. There are many other good revolver choices - S&W 17/617, Ruger Single Six or Single Ten, etc.

If you want to go for .357 mag, the Ruger GP100 is a winner, always. If you want more rounds, the Redhawk holds 8 rounds of .357.

A pre-lock S&W 686 will outlast you most likely and a Marlin 1894c in .357, JM stamped preferably, is lots of fun and a great compliment to any .357 revolver. A Rossi R92 ain't a bad .357 carbine either.

Of course, a Marlin lever gun in .30-30 is lots of fun and almost a prerequisite to bring a PA deer hunter.

22 pistols and cowboy guns are always a good time and make a well rounded collection.

Ruger Single Six Convertible, best of both worlds, .22LR and .22WMR. As said, everyone should have at least one revolver be it single action or double action.

Yeah, I like S&W Revolvers. But if you're serious about marksmanship get a Hammerli Xesse or maybe a used SP 20 (my Grail gun). Walther OSP is great too!
