Thread: A deer's greatest defense?

Re: A deer's greatest defense?
Deer have big ears for a reason, to hear danger coming. Their nose only helps if the wind is blowing in their direction, their ears are on a swivel. I*ve had deer walk up to me while in blaze orange and was motionless and down wind. I hate dry leaves, crunchy snow where a def man could hear you coming.

The size of an animal ears also typically dictates the amount of warmth it can retain or shed shed based on the climate of its environment. The larger the ears the more cooling capabilities it has from different species of deer to elephants. Mule deer have excellent eye sight with 310 degree of view of what’s around them a long with an excellent sense of hearing and of course smell.

Re: A deer's greatest defense?
The deer in my area seem to have few defensive traits. They just stand there staring at you. I have had to shoo them out of my driveway so I wouldn't run them over. They seem perfectly comfortable walking down the street at noon ignoring people and cars. These are suburban deer.

Re: A deer's greatest defense?
The deer in my back yard are pretty friendly.
If the doe have young, I knit them sweaters.
Come archery season, they are safe unless if course they are not wearing those sweaters.
Ok. Seriously. I'm usually 20 feet up in that backyard tree stand.
I have been seen by deer because I can't sit still.
Quite often they will key on me for up to 4 or 5 minutes.
If I can stay motionless, most of the time they will not spook.
If they scent me, they either turn and run or on.more than.one occasion make a big loop around me.
The sound of a camera will spook many.
So. Their greatest defense I would split between nose and ears depending on which sense is triggered.

Damn, you got elk in Pittsburgh? That's better than our mountain lions in SEPA. Any moose in the Poconos?

Not sure about the moose but yes there is an elk.in Pittsburgh.
She's mostly in the bottom of my new 8.5 cu ft freezer but here all the same.
I also believe there are cougars in Pittsburgh ( well, southern Pittsburgh) but I can't verify that since the bars are closed.

Re: A deer's greatest defense?
That depends on the road. Last year I was across the street from my cabin, about 5 - 6 blocks in far enough to not see the vehicles but still hear them.
First shot clipped a branch and clipped the side of the deer breaking two ribs and blasting a chunk out of the one in between. Deer did a 180 and started towards the road and started running & I'm trying to line up a shot when here comes a vehicle, possibly larger than a car, and the deer hit the brakes...his fatal error.
