It is an old gun writer thing. Many military rifles had the safety incorporated into the bolt assembly. When military rifle sporterizing was in it's hay day, many had cross bolt safeties added to be out of the scope's way. This was considered "Hokey" by gun writers because if dropped the striker(Firing pin) could slip off the trigger or sear. They may have been right. Anyway, that is pretty much how it started.
