Or you could get an automobile scissors jack and strap a Caldwell front bag to the top and use that as a front. Rear could be any bag or even your weak arm.
I like your innovative thoughts, you could do well in Alaska.

Thanks but it isn't my idea. It was originated (afaik) by Fred Cornell of Sayre PA. Only he embellished it a bit with a flat piece welded to the top of jack to support the front bag and a flat piece on the bottom, of the jack for stability and a knob on the screw bolt to make turning and adjusting easier.

I've always been intrigued by the Sitka region.

We used small bags of shotgun shot on the shooting table at 100 yds to sight for deer. Dad could get 1" groups with his Rem 700. Me, 1-1/2 to 2 with the 760.

A lead sled would work for my rifle but I don't know how I'd use it for my Beretta. I've got sand bags, a shooter's stick thing, and some foam wedges but I don't like any of those. The issue is the height more than the stability; I want to be able to adjust it up or down without having to go into my car and get a bunch of crap to pile up.

At least with these types of rests you still have to use some skill because the rifle isn't "locked" into a front and rear rest.

At most I'll rest the rifle on a range bag for it's first sight in (typically 200 yards) once I'm close to my desired grouping I move off the bench and see how it groups from prone, sitting, standing and make adjustments from there.

I'm afraid long gone are the days of the young guys learning and mastering marksmanship. Less then 10 years ago we would have a full line (20 shooters) for my clubs Civilian Marksmanship Program matches. Today that number is 5 or 6 shooters.

It seems now-a-days most guys are on the range are either plinking, spraying and praying, or running and gunning and would have a difficult time hitting a man size target at 200 yards from the standing position.

Like I said earlier. The MTM pistol rest has done me fine for years now. If you want to borrow it let me know.

No need to throw insults at me for an honest post. The "hard way" is hard, so many people will choose the easier path.

Are you a member of PMSC? If so, you're welcome to join us on most Sundays (in the warm weather) at 10 AM on our rifle range.
We would be happy to help you with some marksmanship training/tips.

What kind of rifle are you shooting? From your original post all you say is "30 round 7.62x39 magazines" which could be an AK, SKS, or an AR.
Are you having issues sighting it in? What distances are you shooting? Are you using handloads or factory ammo?

Funny thing about that! I've never had any luck using a rest for handgun. When I chrono loads from a bench I just rest my arms on the bench and fire. Zeroing a pistol I generally do from either a standing unsupported offhand or strict "bullseye" type offhand. Red dot or iron sights, but I always wear my prescription reading glasses when zeroing so I can see the front sight or dot correctly!
